Rumors are flying again that the Reds are talking to the A's about Joe Blanton. The Reds have apparently made it clear that Jay Bruce is off the table, but talks involve Homer Bailey, Johnny Cueto, and Joey Votto. According to Daugherty and Fay in the Enquirer, the A's are seeking two prospects for Blanton.

Blanton is a fairly local fellow, a native of Kentucky from Bowling Green and UK alum. He was the A's first-round pick in 2002. Blanton has three major league years in, and has proven to be a capable workhorse, with a 42-34 lifetime record including 14-10 with a 3.95 ERA last year. HE would make a capable #3 starter.

There are red flags about Blanton. Last year he had a 2.69 ERA in his home park, 5.11 on the road. For his career, he's at 3.55 in Oakland, 4.66 on the road. He's not a hard thrower who "misses bats." Going from Oakland's pitchers park to Cincinnati would deliver a hit to his ERA. Of course, he would also be moving to the non-DH league, and to the slightly easier NL. He also will make $3.8 million this year, and while he is three seasons from free agency, will continue to get more expensive.

On his blog, Fay has reported that the A's have asked for Bailey or Cueto, plus Votto and a third player. That is much too high a price to pay. I would give up Cueto, perhaps, but not a package including two of those three. Blanton is competent, proven, and a solid starter who could help the team make a run at the NL Central. But a deal of Cueto-Votto-Maloney, or some such, would simply be too much to give up.

Fay says the A's may back off the price to make the deal happen. They'll have to.
