The Reds dropped an afternoon game to the Astros 5-3. It was more of the same story: a poor offense that can't win without an outstanding pitching performance. Johnny Cueto was decent, but not outstanding. Cueto gave up five hits in seven innings, on eight hits and two walks. He struck out two. Good enough some days, but not this day. Kent Mercker and Francisco Cordero each threw a shutout inning of relief. Cordero has been used more in get-work games than in actual save situations, it seems without actually counting them. What a waste of $46 million, if you can't get your closer a lead in the 9th. The Reds had eight hits and no walks, and only one extra-base hit, a double by Scott Hatteberg. Corey Patterson and Edwin Encarnacion each had two singles. Jerry Hairston started at shortstop today and got a hit, but was picked off. The Reds now head to San Francisco for three games with the Giants. If they can't beat up on that sad-sack team, the season will be over when it's barely started. |
