The Reds lost this afternoon 7-5 to split their series with the Mets. Edinson Volquez appeared to be getting squeezed in the strike zone, and had trouble all afternoon. It went 10 innings, and Edwin Encarnacion's throwing error let in the winning runs. Volquez threw 110 pitches in five innings, giving up eight hits, three walks, and four runs. He struck out three. His stuff looked good, but he had trouble getting called strikes and came in with some pitches. Jeremy Affeldt gave up one run in 1 1/3, Mike Lincoln went 2/3, David Weathers and Francisco Cordero each threw a shutout inning (although Cordero walked a tightrope), then Bill Bray was charged with two unearned runs in the 10th before Gary Majewski got the final out. Brandon Phillips had two hits, including a homer. Adam Dunn and Encarnacion also homered. Ken Griffey had a double. The Reds had just six hits to the Mets' 14, but were effiicient with them. They just weren't quite prolific enough. San Diego now comes to visit the Queen City in the midst of a bad season. Monday night Josh Banks and Homer Bailey, both rookies, will get the starts. Tuesday night will feature Johnny Cueto and Jake Peavy. Wednesday's afternoon game will showcase Bronson Arroyo and Greg Maddux. Good tickets still available! |
