When this series began, we were hoping for a Reds sweep to reach .500. Instead, the surging Rockies swept the Reds as they try to get themselves back into an NL West race with no team over .500. The final this afternoon was 11-0, and after the third inning the Reds were never really in it. Josh Fogg, battered by a batting practice line drive last week, was battered by the Rockies for three runs in the third and four more in the fourth. Fogg lasted just 3 2/3, giving up seven runs on eight hits (including two homers) and three walks with four strikeouts. Todd Coffey pitched 1 1/3 and gave up another run, Gary Majewski pitched two shutout innings, Jeremy Affeldt gave up three runs in one inning, then Francisco Cordero mopped up with a shutout inning. Again, the Reds' offense was stymied, with just six hits. Only Adam Dunn's double went for extra bases. Dunn and Joey Votto had two hits each. It was so bad, Ken Griffey and Brandon Phillips were pulled early for a break in favor of Jolbert Cabrera and Andy Phillips. The Reds slip back to six games under, at 50-56. They will hit the road now, traveling to Houston for three, then after an off-day three more at Washington before returning home. Now, of course, would be a good time for a six-game road winning streak against a couple of mediocre teams. |
