Without an official list, it can be tough for the layman to pick out who must be protected from the Rule 5 draft. But, until someone comes out with the list, I will give it a go. Here is my list of players who must go on the roster, or risk being lost to Rule 5 at the Winter Meetings in December. Drew T. Anderson, OF who hit .290 at Louisville but with lousy K/W ratio. James Avery, a righty starter who struggled with Chattanooga this year. Shaun Cumberland, OF who came over from Tampa Bay last year and had a good season this year at Chattanooga, but struggled at Louisville. Carlos Fisher, a righty reliever who pitched in AA and AAA this year. He has had good minor league K rates and K/W ratios. Tonys Gutierrez, 1B who is light on power. Sean Henry, speedy OF with some power who had a pretty good year in Chattanooga. Sam Lecure, a righty starter who had some success in AA this year. Logan Ondrusek, a tall, slim righty reliever who pitched mostly in Class A but briefly with Louisville. B.J. Szymanski, OF who has never hit. I omitted some guys who would have to be protected by service, but are not considered good enough prospects to merit roster protection. Likely, I also missed several players. There are some guys who probably do not have to be put on the roster yet, but are good prospects. I don't think CF Drew Stubbs has to be protected, although they may put him on the roster. At the least, he will get an invite to major league spring training for a look-see. He had a good year, maybe a breakthrough year. OF Danny Dorn is also not eligible yet, but deserves a look. IF Chris Valaika is in the same boat, and climbing the ladder. 3B Juan Francisco continues to show power and strike out way too much. My guess is Fisher and Lecure go on the roster, and for the rest it's a crap shoot. |
