San Diego just released Josh Bard when he declined assignment to the minors. It might be a good idea for the Reds to pick him up. Bard is now 30, and will be 31 when next season rolls around. He is regarded as a good defensive catcher. He hit just .202 with 1 HR this season, in 178 AB, which is why the Padres let him go. But, last season, he hit .285 with 5 HR in 118 games, and the year before hit .338 with 9 HR in 93 games. He would be a good choice to alternate with Ryan Hanigan, I think. No idea what kind of contract he would ask for, but Bard seems like a low-cost alternative that could be of value to Cincinnati. |
