Cincinnati announced the re-signing of reliever Mike Lincoln, giving him a two-year, $4 million contract. It calls for a salary of $1.5 million for 2009, and $2.5 million for 2010. There are also additional incentives. I think this is a major mistake. Lincoln came back from arm surgery throwing harder than ever before, reaching into the mid-90s with his fastball, and posted a 4.48 ERA in 64 games. He was a serviceable middle reliever. For this, the team is willing to pay four million dollars over two years? They have younger arms who can do the same job for much less. These arm injury guys can come back strong, then fade as the mileage piles back up on their rested arms. Lincoln is a decent pitcher, but not worth multiple millions. This is a misafire. Lincoln had a 3.29 ERA going into August, then had a lousy month. Then, says John Fay, "He recovered with a strong September, posting a 3.52 ERA in 10 games." A 3.52 ERA is a "strong" September? This is the kind of warped reasoning that leads to giving a middle reliever a $4 million contract. |
